SLEEPMAKESWAVES – MADE OF BREATH ONLY (BIRD’S ROBE RECORDS)
Even within rock music, post-rock is much aligned. Plenty of people can’t be bothered to sit through an hour of instrumental, progressive music, but for those that can there are some real delights waiting to be uncovered and Made Of Breath Only by Australia’s sleepmakeswaves is one such reward.
In much the same way as Explosions In The Sky have actual melodies, and God Is An Astronaut have actual riffs, sleepmakeswaves have managed to find the sweet-spot of rock within post-rock and incorporated things that fans of “actual” rock music can grasp on to. There are still the lengthy, swirling passages of progressive ambiance that unite most post-rock bands, but there is also plenty of engaging material that keeps you listening (rather than just thinking: “This is all getting a bit self-indulgent now I’m going to listen to Motorhead“).
