LOATHE – THE COLD SUN (SHARPTONE RECORDS)
Deathcore as a genre is not really one that has much, shall we say, variation, in it. You turn up, you tune your guitars down, you chug for 40 minutes, you leave. But amazingly Loathe have managed to make an album that is deathcore+. The plus is for all of the extra little things they add in: actual riffs, metalcore song structures, euphoric clean singing, dark, twisted electronic trickery that is really what makes The Cold Sun so interesting to listen to.
Loathe are not quite there yet in terms of being a truly stand-out act. But The Cold Sun is a really, really good album, one that far belies their youth and relatively unknown status. With the right ideas within them and the right producer behind them, Loathe could definitely make a truly outstanding album one day, but for now we have The Cold Sun, which is a great listen if you like your modern heavy music to have a bit more going on than simply just Being Heavy.
