But we’re not here to focus on the singles that everybody knows, we’re here to look at the songs that accompanied them. ‘The Colour and The Shape’ had no shortage of great songs, not by a long shot. But if we had to pick just one, then ‘Hey, Johnny Park!‘ emerges as the victor.
Great opening riff? Check. Delicate and accomplished verses? Check. Infectious choruses? You bet. This track really allowed new recruits Pat Smear and Nate Mendel to flex their own musical muscles on rhythm guitar and bass respectively, with Grohl still covering drums as William Goldsmith had already joined and left the band by the time they recorded the majority of the album. But personnel details aside, there is no getting around the fact that ‘Hey, Johnny Park!’ is quintessential Foo Fighters – good-times-to-be-had post-grunge that could and should still be a part of their setlist to this very day.
