Totally Confused (along with the likes of Asshole and Piss On The Door) were all great examples of underground counterculture slack-folk, but were never going to find wide appeal or make any real impact on the world outside of a small LA following. Loser, however, changed that.
In a 1997 interview with Beat Poet Allen Ginsberg published in the Shambhala Sun, Beck said of Loser: “At the time Loser was recorded, it was, y’know, hearing so much rap, where it’s very self-aggrandising. Like, I’m so dope, I got more of this and that, I’m so bad. I was trying to be ironic by saying, I completely suck, I’m the worst. Well, the irony’s not obvious to everybody. It got hijacked somewhere along the way.”
Taken in the right spirit or not, Loser signalled the arrival of Beck and his quirky mix of beatnik rap, folk and turntable inspired wackiness.
