As the lights start to dim at Irving Plaza in NYC the fans start to chant, “Struts, Struts, Struts!” Hailing from Derby, a city in the Midlands of England, The Struts have played in NYC once before, but never somewhere this big, and not to a sold out crowd. Other than a few lone shows in California when the band was first starting out, The Struts first came to America in early 2015, so the fact this gig sold out so quickly, is a testament to how great of a band they truly are. Tonight’s show is their US album release show for Everybody Wants and the crowd is ecstatic; girls, boys, women and men, all screaming their heads off for these eccentric Englishmen. Guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies take the stage first and after they take their positions, front man Luke Spiller takes the stage to a raucous applause.

The energy the band let’s off is something we have only heard about. Within seconds of their opening number, ‘Roll Up’, we are reminded of both Freddie Mercury and David Bowie as we watch Spiller draw the crowd in with his vocals and dance moves. Having seen The Struts play only once before, in 2012, opening for McFly, it’s amazing to see how much the band has come into their own. There were really no low points of their set; The Struts, with their glittery ensembles, and multiple costume changes have transported us back to the 1960s when rock ‘n’ roll was in its heyday.

The band played through their singles, such as, ‘Could Have Been Me’ and ‘Kiss This’, but also treated us to new material such as, ‘Mary Go Round’. Usually, the crowd would take this as a sign to go back to the bar and refresh their pints, but not this crowd; they absolutely lose their minds. Throughout the set, the fans go from excited to ecstatic and the vibe of the venue never falters away from that.

The Struts have an energy that isn’t common in bands today. They command the stage and the crowd as if they have been doing this for 30 years, rather than the 6 that the band has actually been around. The Struts will be touring the rest of the USA throughout April and May, following that they are heading to Europe for a short tour. We definitely suggest checking them out when they are in your city, you will not be sorry.
