Yes, grab your shorts and vans and dust off that skateboard, Simple Plan have released a new album. It seems like ages ago that pop-punk kids across the globe collectively lost their shit to ‘Addicted‘ but despite that success and the steady rise in popularity of pop-punk in general ever since, Simple Plan seem to have been left behind a little bit.
So how are they doing now? What have they been up to? Well if you like the phrase “same old” then oh boy are you about to have a good day. The winning formula of simplistic, pop-rock riffs with singer Pierre Bouvier’s signature higher-register vocals and straight-up pop vocal lines seems to be still very much the go-to for Simple Plan. And why not? There’s very little of the ‘Untitled‘ type stuff on this album (“How could this happen to meeeeeee?”) and Simple Plan are much better at being happy-go-lucky kids singing songs about love ‘Kiss Me Like Nobody’s Watching’ and having fun ‘Boom!‘ than they are trying to be deep and edgy.
There is a reason we haven’t really gone very in-depth on the songs on this album, and that is simply (geddit?) because they sound fairly similar. With the one exception of funk track ‘I Don’t Wanna Go To Bed‘ which has the dubious honour to be the first track to be featured on Mosh that has the rapper Nelly on it. Realistically if you were wanting to put on a Simple Plan album and expecting to be surprised by the jazz licks and thundering death metal vocals you might have been barking up the wrong tree.
But if what you were looking for was inoffensive, catchy pop-rock that makes you just want to have a good day with your mates and fuck everyone else, then you might be on to a good thing with this record.
