Band: Set Your Goals
Release: Burning At Both Ends
If you’ve just read the name of this band and found yourself going ‘I’m sure i’ve seen those guys before but i don’t think i’ve ever heard any of their albums’ then you are definitely not alone. The truth is although having been a band since 2004 and now on their third studio album, Set Your Goals have always been somewhat of an enigma. While they’ve become a hugely sought after live band, their studio releases have always let them down, and whilst new album ‘Burning At Both Ends’ is a definite step in the right direction it still seems to be lacking that little spark that makes their live shows special.
That being said, this isn’t a bad album. There are some definitely good songs on this album, opening track ‘Cure For Apathy’ kicks the album off in typical ‘Set Your Goals’ style, with a big sing-a-long chorus and some fast paced verses. Second track ‘Start The Reactor’ throws in the standard gang vocals to get you hooked. Third track and first single ‘Certain’ shows a slightly more grown up sound to the rest of the album; it’s the perfect track to hook in some new fans.
The good thing about this album is that while they’ve definitely grown up whilst writing it, they still have all the energy and excitement that previous fans love about them. ‘Exit Summer’ could easily be ten years old, but still has a fresh excitement to it. ‘Illuminated Youth’ is another fast paced fist pumping track that will have you singing along.
Aswell as the old school tracks you will find plenty of new school tracks on the album, like the chuggy ‘Start The Reactor’ as well as ‘London Heathrow’ with their harmonised riffs and bouncing vocal harmonies, they’re sure to hook in some new fans.
The album gets a little samey, and probably won’t be finding its way into your top ten list any time soon. However it shows a band who are on the up, and I’m sure you will be hearing more from these guys very soon.
