Band: Serpico
Release: We Can Rebuild (EP)
Release Date: Out Now
London’s Serpico have a touch of the apocalyptic about them. With the nightmarish artwork to the despairing lyrics, its interesting to note the optimistic title of the EP, ‘We Can Rebuild‘.
First track ‘No Time For Heroes‘ hurtles straight into the band’s pop-punk ethos – with impressive backing harmonies aside – the track builds to a crescendo of riffs before throwing you back into smooth chorus.
The quartet keep their punk roots close to the heart throughout the EP, keeping the pace fast and the ‘woahs‘ frequent. ‘Nothing Left‘ is more than a slight nod to the beats of US punks Anti-Flag and Rise Against. There’s a chorus which should have no problem igniting a few mosh pits at the band’s forthcoming tour dates.
Elliot Minor/Spirits singer Alex Davies even makes an appearance on the band’s own interpretation of Therapy‘s ‘Screamager‘. Its a credit to the band that his vocals aren’t too noticeable from the already clean, but emotive notes of frontman Mikey.
‘We Can Rebuild‘, the album’s title track brings in a welcome grungier sound, far from the sugar-sweet smoothness of the previous tracks. There’s a raw edge to the vocals that hints at early Incubus sounds, while the screams and chants sound surprisingly natural.
Serpico certainly have something good going on here, edgy and raw yet highly listenable. We personally cannot wait to see what future gems they come up with.
