Review: Seasons Collide – Horizons (EP)

We check out ‘Horizons’ EP, the debut record from Seasons Collide. Check out what we thought inside!

Band: Seasons Collide
Release: Horizons (EP)
Release Date: Out Now

Coining themselves as ‘catchy metalcore from the UK’, Seasons Collide has literally just banged out their debut record ‘Horizons‘ EP and aside from the obvious influence who have an identically titled record (cough…Parkway Drive), the comparably young band seem to be relatively in-the-know with regards to how to tackle an industry overrun with too many cowboys and nowhere near enough Indians.

The opening track happens to be the title-track ‘Horizons‘, the compressed drums build rapidly into a riff perfect to nod to your head to, screams are complimented perfectly by melodic and octave-based cleans before descending into a beefy bitch of a breakdown. The song is around the perfect duration, you know, we’ve all heard that one over-indulgent metal/metalcore track that drones continually for seven or eight minutes, fortunately, Seasons Collide have not adhered to this.

‘Tides Of Change’ is up next, driven by a catchy-as-hell chorus that somehow seems to cement itself into the psyche of the listener and not leave, as much as you may wish it to. The melody, key and note choices are perfect for this kind of genre and it seems that as ‘Tides Of Change‘ falls into ‘The Long Road Home‘ initially reminds the listener of Bury Tomorrow quite strongly, a definite compliment for a band that revels in this kind of ‘heavy yet melodic’ sector. The band seem have incorporated all types of influence and although the genre in which this record seems to fall is definitely not original and has been done almost too many times to mention, Seasons Collide have pulled it out of the bag so far.

‘Run For Your Life‘ is a slightly off-time, jaunty track with an obscure riff that shouldn’t really work, but it does, very well actually as ‘Saviour‘ begins, the concluding track to a pretty damn strong debut EP. Although the Parkway Drive reference has already been made (sorry, boys), with the clean vocals aside, this track gives off definite scents akin to said band in a very tasteful fashion.

The boys in Seasons Collide should be very proud of what they have created as a debut record, it is strongly recommended that if you are a fan of bands such as Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, Bury Tomorrow and Architects, that you pick this up and familiarise yourself.

8/10
