Band: Paper Tigers
Release: Safe In Words (EP)
Release Date: Out Now
Pop punk is all getting a bit similar nowadays. We’ve all got our favourites of the genre and the quota of bands has basically been filled. It’s time to shut the gate on anyone who desires to make a record that only boasts recycled riffs and plagiarised phrases. Luckily, Paper Tigers have not gone down that route and opted for a more original and polished rock album that is one hell of a debut from the Staffordshire five-piece.
Produced by The Blackout and Kids In Glass Houses producer Romesh Dodangoda, ‘Safe In Words’ follows suit with the same sophisticated production. The vocals of frontman Jim Carter are also likened to many of the other bands that have recorded at Long Wave Studios, especially in track ‘The Whistleblower’. Opener ‘Summer On Blossom Street’ has an ironic title for the aggressive tone portrayed. The intro sounds big enough in the first ten seconds to grab your attention and that is a vital necessity for a debut EP.
“You say you’ve had enough, is it ever enough?” are the honest words of ‘Vignettes’ that effortlessly show their authority. Paper Tigers strive to make “something that people can really relate to” in the truthful drive of their music. This is also shown in ‘Back To You’.
All four tracks on this EP retain an energy that will leave you hungry for more; it’s just a shame it’s only an EP. But it’s a good indicator of what the future holds for this band. Big things.
