Band: Natives
Release: This Island (Single)
Release Date: 23/07/12
Previously, lots of bands have changed their name and it seems to have been for the best. Starfish became Coldplay, plain Blink added some digits for individuality to be Blink 182 and now Not Advised have become Natives.
This cooler, contemporary namesake has given Natives a clean slate to leave the days of Not Advised behind and push forward with a sound that’s much more 2012, although their older days are not to be forgotten. The achievements they relished such as selling out a headline tour and supporting the likes of Set Your Goals and You Me At Six have given them the confidence to move on from just being a conventional rock band.
‘This Island’ is an upbeat offering with an energetic chorus. The words, “when you took it all, you left me on this island” are memorable and it’s imaginable that fans would go crazy to this live. It’s not dissimilar to the works of Futures, who the Natives boys have just finished supporting. They’re another band that changed their name and sound in their transition from being Tonight Is Goodbye (RIP).
Singer Jim Thomas proposes “I’m gonna set this place on fire, so my future’s looking brighter”: it sure is already for all five members of Natives.
