Band: Hung Up
Release: A Minds Way Away (EP)
Release Date: 10/12/13
We’ve all heard the suppressed mutterings on the scene recently, a whisper of days that we thought were long gone. Emo. Is it coming back? Well we are here to tell you that it is back, so dust off your impressively long fringe and get out those spiked belts because Hung Up are here with their brand new EP ‘A Minds Way Away’. It is truly the most brilliant burst of emo since the days of From First To Last.
The EP starts with intro ‘Amnesia’. Musically prominent with just one line of vocals really shows off the abilities of the band straight away. A clear cut pop punk edge with a melancholy vocal melody which possesses the most typical American shrill emo whine that you could possibly imagine, and we are not for one second implying that is a bad thing. Second track ‘Getting Old’ is somewhat abruptly put together, with twists and turns where least expected, and a heavy hint of Brand New filtered in for good measure.
‘Like A Dog…’ is a sure stand out track. The raw vocals and gutsy guitar riffs take a hit at all the overly produced albums of the day with a big fuck you. Final offering ‘Sinking’ graciously hands us something a little different: an acoustic track. Vocals are all we need from ‘Sinking’, the honesty and integrity takes us straight into the arms of Hung Up, and we don’t think we want them to let us go.
Hung Up feel like a blast from the past, however throw something completely unique into the mix. They have the energy and stamina to keep up with the likes of the recent pop punk big times, yet we hear the calling of teenage angst making a triumphant return throughout ‘A Minds Way Away’. There is truly no other band like Hung Up at present, and we are so glad that they are paving the way for emo once again. Emo. We hadn’t realised how much we’d missed you until we heard your woeful tones once again.
