Band: Chasing Dragons
Release: Take Flight For A Firefight (Album)
Release Date: Out Now
Hitting the scene from Leeds, heavy rock five-piece Chasing Dragons have just released their debut album ‘Take Flight For A Firefight’.
Straight away, it’s great to hear something a bit different from everything else at the moment. The female vocals are edgy with a slightly rough edge and complement the steady riffs and guitar flicks. Their sound instantly throws you back to Avenged Sevenfold’s ‘City Of Evil’ days with the particular guitar style and pattern, but in all honesty, it’s verging on annoying. They may be playing their own music, but the style is too similar, resulting in a ‘trying to be like them but not as good’ vibe. As the first few tracks play through, the annoyance starts grating a bit.
Ignoring that, they are well strung together and the female fronted vocals do make it stand out from the current scene. Track four – ‘Seeds Of Tomorrow’ – is the first track that shows the band for who they really are and what they can be. This is definitely the way forward, building their own sound and growing on it. The riffs throughout all the tracks have a steady beat which is sure to get your feet tapping within seconds. The range of instrumental techniques is very impressive, from solos to echoing flicks.
Vocalist Tank grows on you throughout the record. It’s amazing not to hear another Hayley Williams rip off. Her style is a perfectly suited mix of grunge and pop, with its singalong tone and rough edges. The band’s cover of ‘Black Velvet’ is executed well, with the band having put their own stamp on an already great song.
Overall, the first few tracks are quite annoying with the initial sound-a-like thoughts, but the band’s own sound develops through the album, showing off their own individual style and potential. For the band’s debut EP, a good effort.
