Band: CB6
Release Title: ‘Succession’ (Album)
Release Date: 05/08/2013
Not for the faint-hearted, far from a calm easy ride comes the debut full-length from Essex thrashers CB6, a band set to tear the heavier side of alternative music a new exit hole.
‘Perfect‘ gives a completely unsubtle insight into what ‘Succession‘ has in store with thrash-orientated, blues-styled riff sequences going hard behind the violently sculpted vocal style of Ryan Monteith. No bollocks or fancy-pants wankery as we progress into ‘Clocks‘, a slower-paced, traditionally styled in terms of hardcore/thrash, the end section being more than enough for any hardcore, metal or punk fan to gurn and nod a head to.
‘Crown‘ is slightly more staggered without being an oddball as ‘Elephant In The Room‘ spits in your face with a Boston hardcore vibe that would easily be at home with bands like Madball, Agnostic Front and Sick Of It All. It’s already becoming quite obvious that ‘Succession‘ pisses all over any other bullshit ‘hardcore’ band that the UK seems to be shitting out at the moment. In terms of hardcore/thrash, you won’t get much harder than this.
The groove and sheer power of ‘Deep Rooted‘ pays perfect praise to the insanely blues-heavy ‘Cold Season‘, it’s bouncy, flamboyant but still violent as fuck without being ‘hardman hardcore’, a running trend that seems to be flaccidly excreting over all things heavy currently in the UK. Fortunately CB6 have saved the day with this offering.
The softer musical interlude ‘Penny‘ slithers in title-track ‘Succession‘, a much more traditionally thrash metal sounding track still laced with the infusions of Monteith’s vocals, the band showcasing that ‘hardcore’ doesn’t have to stay bolted by the bollocks to the same 0-3-5-6 tedium, but, let’s face it, it will until it fizzles out in the same way that ‘melodic hardcore’ did.
Top record, top grooves, hard vocals, no bollocks. Buy it, you’re a fucking idiot if you don’t.
9/10
