Review: Blame – Gracious Malady (Album)

Check out what we thought of Blame’s debut album Gracious Malady…

Band: Blame
Release: Gracious Malady (Album)
Release Date: 12/11/12

When we first listened to ‘Gracious Malady’, the debut album from Staffordshire based band Blame, we developed a sense of classic rock and roll nostalgia. Think AC/DC meets Pearl Jam. With brash sounds and unrefined vocals ‘Gracious Malady’ features ten hearty anthems which were all a pleasure to listen too.

Fiercely energetic track ‘Outsiders’ is an explosive way to start the album. You can’t help but fall in love with the quirky nature of the opening track thanks to shout out loud choruses and catchy lyrics.

With fast paced guitar riffs having also been integrated in the track, Blame have created a vibrant sound which will put a smile on your face.

The band are able to demonstrate their ability of creating an old school sound with an edgy yet fresh feel effortlessly in hit single ‘Floods’. Holding the title of being our favourite track on the album, the rugged musical memoir is a blast from the past. Bold, rash harmonies power the song and we hear James Brighouse and Sam Johnson working together in order to create a sing along favourite amongst the band’s ever growing fan base.

In parts the album has an extremely punk driven sound. ‘Wash Away’ just one of the few songs on the album which is able to pinpoint teenage angst. Vivacious melodies helped to create a sense of union. Similarly, closing track ‘Picture This’ leaves you craving all things rock and roll. A rugged undertone dominates the thundering track which makes you want to listen to the album for a second time.

Although at times we wanted the album to be a little more diverse, Blame are clearly a band who are passionate about the music they grew up with and have been able to leave their trademark on a signature old school style sound which has and will be popular for years to come. To us ‘Gracious Malady’ is a heavy blend of both the past and present and is an album Blame should be proud of.

7/10
