Review: As I Lay Dying – Awakened (Album)

Read our thoughts on the new album from As I Lay Dying!

Band: As I Lay Dying
Release: Awakened (Album)
Release Date: Out Now

Throwing out their sixth full-length album are gutsy metallers As I Lay Dying. With the colossal amount of hype already waiting, ‘Awakened’ had to stand up to the mark of previous albums and match the meaty metal tracks that the band had already unleashed.

Straight away, first track ‘Cauterize’ throttles into guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa’s chugging riffs with the ever so heavy vocals from frontman Tim Lambesis. The guttural screams fling the memory back to the old beauties; it’s as if it hasn’t changed one bit which is fan-bloody-tastic. Usually, change in a band’s sound can really benefit them, but in AILD‘s case, they pretty much hit the nail on the head from day one so have no need to change. Yes, there are small differences like the slight increase in cleaner melodic vocals, but they’ve been slowly progressing throughout the albums so it’s nothing really that new. We like utterly heavy metal to punch the floor to so please stay that way!

As a whole, the album is heavy, full of strong breakdowns, eccentric drum fills and punchy vocals but the tracks can sometimes blend into one another. Saying that, it’s only a minor problem and doesn’t matter too much. The album is packed with raw, pounding track after another and vocals that would rip apart any normal person’s throat, making it impossible for any metalhead with a decent taste in riffs to dislike it.

Stand out tracks have to be the utterly amazing ‘A Greater Foundation’ (which already knocked the socks off fans when the band released the video just before the album’s release), ‘Resilience’ and ‘Cauterize’.

As mentioned before, their style hasn’t changed too much, but sometimes that’s just what we want and need as listeners. If something’s already amazing, why change it to something that will probably just ruin it? Nothing is wrong with some good ol’ chuggin’, gang vocalin’, breakdownin’ metal!

8/10
