Pennywise – O2 Apollo, Manchester – 08/11/2014|Live Review

Punk legends Pennywise have been touring with Rise Against throughout the UK and Europe. Find out what we thought of their latest outing!

Pennywise have over 25 years worth of punk rock experience, and you could feel it throughout the show. There’s something a bit old school about their shows; but it’s what’s made them so popular. They haven’t changed since day one and never will. In the end it’s a glorified garage show, which just so happens to have a bit more of an audience than the neighbours and the inevitably called police officer who’s attempting to quiet you down. This isn’t an insult either; it’s just a metaphor that perfectly encapsulates everything the band stands for: music, beer and just having a incredible time with your mates.

The jokes and the jibes were coming out thick and thin, as were the hits. ‘Time To Burn’, ‘Fuck Authority’ and even a cover of another incredible group of punk legends, Bad Religion. You could really tell that the party had started with Pennywise. The crowd were really getting involved, and hats off to the gentlemen next to us who was going completely insane for the entire set, you sir made it for us.

Strangely what was blindingly missing from the set was any tracks from their new album ‘Yesterdays’, and instead was pure hit central, which to be fair to them is probably what kept the crowd bouncing from track to track. We hope they’re saving the material for a future headline tour.

Each track was on point; it was head banging, body thrashing fun. If you call yourself a true fan of punk and Pennywise aren’t on your list of bands you absolutely must see then what are you doing with your life? Although, if you’re just a casual fan you could be forgiven for getting a little bit bored, as in the end each track has the tendency to blend into the other without an awful lot of change, unless you’re a definitive Pennywise fan and you can easily tell the difference.
