Death metal troops Malevolent Creation have been around forever (28 years to be precise). These old dogs are road worn, possibly with a hint of arthritis and if recent controversy would have you believe, non-the wiser. Now, they have dropped another record, Dead Man’s Path.

Like the gates of hell album cover, the spoken word title track is a slow, demonic, welcome to a ride you’re never coming off. Dark with drabs of melody, it’s unusual and gives you the creeps.

Elsewhere it’s business as usual though, blast beats and drumming that threatens to crack skulls rain supreme. While the six minute ‘Imperium (Kill Force Rising)’ is brimming with demonic vigor, it does drag until a sharp solo is unleashed, making it worthwhile.

While at times, the constant fast paced attack with the guttural growls of main man Bret Hoffman, feels like you’re being repeatedly bludgeoned with the same sound, there are a few touches to transform from the norm. There’s an old school touch to ‘Corporate Weaponry’ while there is a thrash-tastic and frantic flow to ‘12th Prophecy’, the standout track.

However, despite the polished sound and a few sporadic touches, you know you’re listening to a Malevolent Creation record. It is no bad thing. Compared to some outfits, Dead Man’s Path is easier on the ear. But what it does lack is true diversity and progression, which makes for a tired listen at times.

By the time ‘Fragmental Sanity’ appears out of the fire and brimstone the urge to headbang is stifled with a yawn.

Overall Dead Man’s Path is a modern day, idiot’s guide to death metal. There are no signs of anyone looking to break new ground, which is a shame.
