Lonewolves the new EP from London Death Punks Generation Graveyard is here, here to give you 5 tracks of riff heavy horror that can’t fail in getting your attention. This is the sound of horror punk metal at it’s very finest.
The EP opens up with ‘Abominate/Desolate’, straight away you are head butted into submission by a wall of dirty distortion and an arse kicking drum sound that rattles round your chest. What is evident straight away is that these are no sleaze infused punks with nothing to back up the killer riffs. Generation Graveyard may have something to say- their message isn’t about partying hard or getting chicks. There is a certain political undercurrent here and the message seems to be that these guys are really pissed off.
The band have many killer elements throughout this EP and at times the sound harks back to bands like Killing Joke especially in vocals. This is evident in the track ‘Deletist’ which is two and a half minutes of brutal aggro punk that Jaz Coleman and the rest of Killing Joke and bands like Dead Kennedys would be proud off. It’s dirty, scuzzy, uncompromising and more than anything it makes you take notice and drags you in.
The most, dare I say it, commercial sounding track on the EP is ‘The Empty’. Catchy opening riff and a killer vocal hook as the singer shouts “Everyday is the same…… Don’t want to live again”, this could definitley be a dance floor filler at clubs around the country and be a perfect way to introduce new listeners to Generation Graveyard.
Title track ‘Lonewolves’ closes the EP. I must admit I did giggle a little bit when first seeing the title, my mind straight away going to the Hangover movies, title aside though, this is a perfect closer to the record. Once again the band showcase the fact that as pissed off as they are, they still can write hooks and know exactly how to put a song together. No sound is wasted here, not one beat, riff, lyric or gang vocal, everything sits exactly where it should.
All in all Lonewolves is a very strong EP, with the right push and finding the right audience, Generation Graveyard could seriously beyond to a winner here. One part hardcore punk, one part groove, one part scuzzy metal, 100% pissed off. In an age of cookie cutter shaped bands, writing songs about nothing, that lack importance, it is refreshing to have a band like this come through. The revolution is starting people and Generation Graveyard have laid the claim down that they should be the voice of it.
