Ladies and gentlemen. Before you listen to this split EP from Evil Blizzard and Mamuthones we ask you to approach with a very open mind. We’d also like to tell you not to worry, it’s not going to hurt you, repeat to yourself “it’s only music…. it’s only music”. After that prepare for one hell of a trippy experience!
On ‘Collisions Vol.4’ you are greeted first by the psychedelic disco-funk weirdness of Mamuthones. ‘I’ve Gotta Be’ opens with a foot tapping rhythm section and a whole host of lo-fi noises filling up the speakers and flows beautifully into ‘Don’t Be Choosy’. We imagine this is what Beck would sound like after a whole lot of LSD. Throughout Mamuthones four tracks, although upbeat, you have a certain uncertainty that something wicked this way comes. That uncertainty is justified as here come Evil Blizzard and this trip is about to get dark.
The groove that Mamuthones brought is still there but Evil Blizzard bring a darkness with it. Also they are going to deliver the same song twice, albeit different versions in the forms of ‘Sacrifice’ and then ‘Sacrifice (Teeth Of the Sea’s Offering Remix)’. The first of which comes across like The Doors at their most twisted but with an extra black heart.
The second version grows out of a piano melody that layers up adding, if you can believe it, a new darkness to the offering. Once a faint trumpet joins the mix you really start to feel uneasy before it all drops away. If you think that it’s all over then you are mistaken as this trip has another wave. Coming in with a chorus of voices singing the words “sacrifice” in unison. It’s like you have stumbled upon a cult doing untold things whilst you hide behind a rock unable to look away from the horror that is happening all around your senses.
All in all this is a stunning EP. It is really hard to explain but it really does take you on a trip. OK this is how we can explain this. Remember that episode of The Simpsons when Homer eats the spicy chilli and starts to hallucinate? This EP would be the perfect soundtrack to that whole experience. This shits going to stay with you.
