Don’t let their young age fool you, the brothers and sister in Echosmith are captivating performers. We checked out the band at their recent Amsterdam show.

To say Echosmith have experienced radio success is an understatement. Though you may not be too familiar with their name, chances are you’ve probably heard their singles ‘Cool Kids’ and ‘Come Together’ once or twice before. The Dutch seem to be huge fans of the young band, with their show at Amsterdam venue Melkweg selling out fairly quickly before it was quickly upgraded to the bigger hall.

Self-professed progressive pop band Alvarez Kings had the honours of opening up the night. From amidst the smoke-filled stage, gentle dreamy tunes echoed through the walls. Hailing from Rotherham, it took a few songs before the audience started to take full notice of the four-piece. While they didn’t quite get the room bouncing, the crowd happily clapped along to the beat when cued, and the band managed to pose for a photo with a room full of hands high in the air. Safe to say that by the time they closed their set with ‘Postcards From Berlin’, they had won over at least a few new fans.

The brothers and sister in Echosmith may all be between 16 and 22 years old, but they grace the stage with clear years of experience behind them. Between twirling a floral umbrella during ‘Talking Dreams’ and beaming at the audience in genuine awe, singer Sydney Sierota dashes across the stage with such charisma that you can’t help but fall a little in love with her charm. It’s a pity really that there seemed to be an occasional problem with the microphones, with her otherwise captivating voice being drowned out by her brothers’ instruments.

These young-uns had the audience grasped in the palm of their hands and they knew it. From creating a dance party via their upbeat indiepop songs, to getting the crowd pumped with a rendition of the renowned ‘Uptown Funk’, or even bringing two strangers on stage for an awkward slow dance in front of the packed venue, it was all in the name of a good show. A show that ended in confetti too, we might add!

Although it’s clear that Echosmith truly are a radio band, with the room lighting up in radiance each time they performed one of their singles; the Sierota siblings are on a rapid journey upwards that won’t be slowing down anytime soon. This may be the quartet’s first time performing on Dutch soil, but they clearly won’t be playing in such a small venue the next time they’re around. If you’re looking for fun, these guys and gal know the formula.
