Can we get a Bonjour?! French easycorer’s Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! are back with their third studio album, Get Lost, Find Yourself.
Chunk return doing what they best, taking melodic pop punk choruses and combining them with some of the heaviest power chords on the market today. It’s an odd mix yes, but like french fries and milkshake, it just sort of works in its own wonderful way. There’s no denying that Chunk have boat loads of energy. Like toddler who’s just found your secret stash of Red Bull, it’s straight to 100mph from the get go.
Opening with ‘Playing Dead’, the new record is very much on the same wavelength as its predecessor, ‘Pardon My French’. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it just all sounds very familiar. There’s no sense of surprise, nothing that grabs you by the bits to show it means business. Well at least for the first half of the album.
‘What Goes Around’ is pleasantly different. To refer back to the previous genital themed analogy, this track isn’t the type to go straight for your nether regions. No, rather more like the innocent cutesy type that you can’t help but adore. The new vibes keep coming too with ‘Worst Case Scenario’ and the title track, ‘Get Lost Find Yourself” delivering some much more mellow and, in the latter’s case some really chilled acoustic work. It’s all very pleasant indeed.
So then, is Get Lost, Find Yourself a bad record? No, not at all in fact. The whole thing is an enjoyable experience, with elements of their previous work as well as some new ingredients in the cocktail. Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! are proving to be settling in very well in the chaos that is the current rock genre, and hats off to them they’ve earned their place. Solid work chaps, definitely another one for the summer playlist!
