Whether they’re touring or not, post-hardcore quartet Capsize don’t ever seem to stop writing. Having just rounded off a European tour, the band are due to release their second LP A Reintroduction: The Essence Of All That Surrounds Me on July 22nd before hitting the stage at the infamous Warped Tour in the US. Following their 2014 debut LP, The Angst In My Veins, which proved popular with fans all over the world, A Reintroduction… promises more of the same, but with a more distinctly post-hardcore sound.
For seasoned fans of the Southern Californian four-piece, this LP is exactly what has come to be expected of the band; fast, urgent guitar riffs laced with a combination of melodic harmonies and angst-ridden lyrics. The first single from this LP, ‘XX (I Sew My Eyes)’, is an apt representation of what this LP is all about.
‘XX (I Sew My Eyes)’ starts the LP with an angry, energetic explosion which sounds great, but the production of the song can’t help but make the listener wonder if it would sound a million times better live. After all, part of the appeal of Capsize is their raw, garage-band sound, and without doubt the songs that would be absolute belters live lose something in the extensive production process. As the LP continues, highlights include ‘I Think It’s Best We Don’t Talk Anymore’ and ‘Over You’, in which vocalist Daniel Wand perfectly layers a combination of melodic and hardcore vocals over punchy, technical guitar riffs.
A Reintroduction… is 10 tracks which will please any post-hardcore fan. There isn’t really anything that fans of the genre haven’t heard before, but that doesn’t mean that the LP is not enjoyable – in fact, it is aggressive, interesting and takes Capsize into new musical territory, whilst remaining true to their roots. Post-hardcore music has come on in leaps and bounds in the past decade, with bands like A Day to Remember and Pierce The Veil selling out tours all over the world. Will A Reintroduction… be Capsize’s big break? Maybe not, but that’s no reason not to enjoy it for what it is – a fun, fast, emotional LP that is guaranteed to be even better live.
