Big Jesus are hitting hard with the release of their new album Oneiric which heavily showcases their clash of styles and inspirations with the sound world they have been brought into. The band have come to know music in the 90’s Atlanta scene which is very relevant to their overall style of thick fuzzed guitar riffs in comparison to the innocent and almost sighed voice of the lead vocalist.
The most striking feature about Big Jesus’ new album Oneiric’ is the contradiction of thick distorted melodies which should belong in the grunge scene, against the light vocals which would blend seamlessly with a pop song, the fusion becomes very odd. ‘SP’ is the opening track on the album which contains very heavily fuzzed laden guitar riffs but the vocal melodies are popular hooks which draw you into the sickly sweet melodies the band have forged.
Big Jesus also venture into an ambiance of sounds in ‘Shrimp’. The title could imply the exploration of nature and therefore the natural state and production of sounds which would describe the constant rippling of guitar notes similar to the reaction that happens in the ocean. Only in this song does the voice take precedence over the often heavy instrumentation and has a chance to truly shine in its’ delicate nature.
On description, Big Jesus’ sound is hard to imagine but is definitely worth a listen. Their blend of timbres stands out as instantly different and again odd which needs a few listens to get to grips with it. Their unique style brings a new energy to what a grunge basis can stand for and then be remodeled into something completely new. Big Jesus are a band to look out for no doubt.
