Legendary Audioslave and Soundgarden vocalist Chris Cornell died last night in Detroit, a cause of death is so far unknown.

Cornell’s representative Brian Bumbery called the death “Sudden and unexpected” in a statement to The Associated Press. Cornell had currently been on tour with Soundgarden, with the band performing a headline show at Detroit’s Fox Theatre.

Before forming supergroup Audioslave with Rage Against The Machine members Tim Commerford, Tom Morello and Brad Wilk. Cornell made his name with Soundgarden, famously becoming the first recognized grunge band to sign to a major label back in 1988, namely A & M Records, opening the doors for bands like Nirvana.

Tributes have poured in for the vocalists tragic passing, with Jimmy Page, Billy Idol and Gavin Rossdale amongst the thousands that have shared their sadness at the death of the frontman.

Cornell’s friends and family have requested privacy at this time while medical examinations are under way. We would like to share our best wishes and condolences to all those affected by the death of Cornell – who was a true titan of the industry and will be missed severely.
