Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, the rock quartet Nothing More are set to release their eponymous debut album next month; a full-length look in to a powerhouse of talent. Fans can expect nothing short of pure awesome from this record which also features their brand new single ‘This Is The Time (Ballast)‘ as one of its high points.
The album kicks off with a short, production-heavy track entitled ‘Ocean Floor‘ which is more of just an introduction that leads in to the aforementioned single. It’s an interesting technique that a lot of bands use, but Nothing More do it with their own personal flair that sparks an incredible energy right from the get-go. The combination is captivating, and there’s no doubt that the chorus will stick with you.
Another gem is ‘Mr. MTV‘, which sounds like everything but what its title suggests. It’s a rather powerful track, lyric-wise, that tells of how detrimental the industry really can be to independent bands who want to go in their own direction. A particular lyric that really strikes is “empty us of inspiration”, reminding listeners that not all is what it seems when it comes to music and proving that Nothing More are one of the more genuine bands that make a stand about it. ‘I’ll Be OK‘ begins quietly, initially making the track mysterious. It continues on this way, slowly, and it seems like this is a time to reflect over what you’re listening to. It’s not until halfway through that heavy guitars and the strong backbone of the drums really kick in, but then they fade out again to silence.
If any track on this album is to be considered an anthem, it’s definitely ‘Friendly Fire‘ with its intense lyrics and compelling melody. The chorus may technically only consist of four words, but that doesn’t make it any less intricate than the rest of this well put together album. The record then continues with ‘Jenny‘, another short, fairly quiet offering to start with that eventually leads in to the hardcore sound that is so familiar with Nothing More’s listeners. Strangely, it ends quite abruptly when it seems like vocalist Jonny Hawkins is only mid-sentence, so maybe it’s leading on to the beginning of another record? Only time will tell!
Overall, this is an excellent collection of songs that is certain to impress current fans as well as turn newcomers on to Nothing More, proving that they are definitely one to watch for the rest of the year and beyond. With their unique performance on each track, it’s needless to say that they’re already one step ahead of any potential competition.
