It’s another sad day for music. In 2016 so far, there seems to be too many of them. The Beatles producer George Martin has died aged 90. Perhaps the only man who can truly lay claim to the “5th Beatle” tag, Martin signed The Beatles and produced them throughout their continued sonic expansions.
From the Mersey beat sounds of ‘She Loves You’ to the psychedelic wash of ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ Martin was there to capture it all and turn the Liverpool lad’s raw talent into sonic gold.
Here are just ten moments of production magic to sink your teeth into.
I Saw Her Standing There
Even in the first recording sessions, George Martin saw the potential of The Beatles. Tapping into the raw energy the band possesed from their runs at The Cavern Club and in Hamburg, he recorded them as live as possible, running through their stage set. Speaking of recording their debut album, Martin said “I had been up to the Cavern and I’d seen what they could do, I knew their repertoire, and I said ‘Let’s record every song you’ve got, come down to the studios and we’ll just whistle through them in a day'”.
