Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie has commented on the death of the former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, who passed away last month at the age of 87.
Speaking to The Quietus, Gillespie he said:
“She died with a smile on her face because the policies and the philosophies that she brought to this country and put into motion have been carried through by successive governments: John Major, Tony Blair and New Labour and now the coalition. They have all followed the path that she set in motion.”
Primal Scream release their new album, ‘More Light’ on May 13th, which takes the band in a more psychedelic and experimental direction, with the band pushing themselves further as songwriters. Gillespie seems to have even surprised himself with how the record has taken shape: “I can’t explain it. I can’t sit here and pretend that I know how we did it. But you’ve always got something to prove. I think the thing is, is that we’ve got something to say, musically.”
The album track ‘Elimination Blues‘ features guest vocals from Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant. Speaking about the song, Gillespie said that when it was first recorded, without Plant, “it was missing that high lonesome vocal”. He explained the band “tried with girls singing beside me, we tried me singing high notes but that didn’t work but it had to be a guy and it was Robert.”
‘More Light’ is out on May 13th through Ignition Records.
