London Grammar’s Hannah Reid Responds To Sexist Tweet

Vocalist speaks out about sexism in the music industry.

Hannah Reid of British ‘trip hop’ trio London Grammar recently spoke out about a tweet that was posted by BBC Radio 1 in September mentioning her in a sexist fashion, which quickly sparked many complaints. The tweet, which was later deleted, had been posted by the staff of Nick Grimshaw’s Breakfast Show and included a picture of the trio with the caption, “we all think that the girl from @londongrammar is fit. Let us know if you agree on 81199 #ladz”.

In her interview with The Observer, Reid said, “I think it’s the first thing that’s happened where I felt out of control – I think they could have said much worse and more sexist things, but asking people to text in if they agree… Putting my looks up for debate was wrong. And it’s just how casual it was. It does say something about casual sexism.”

Radio 1 have apologised for the tweet, but stated that it was supposed to be ‘ironic’.
