On Friday we made our way to the Roundhouse, for the sold out show of homegrown indie-electro-pop band of the moment, Honne. Support tonight came from Dan Caplen and Liv Dawson.
Liv Dawson could be considered as a mere blip on the scene right now, having only played her first live shows a couple of months ago. But where she lacks in live performance experience, she makes up for with her haunting and ethereal voice. Only talking to give a sweet and coy “thank you” after each track, she gushes for a moment a couple of songs in, to exclaim she’s never performed anywhere of this size.
However, with her debut single “Tapestry” racking up over 2 million plays on Spotify, she is surely set to make a pretty big mark in the coming months. Her soulful voice is backed by a mellow and slightly electronic undertow, and sets the pace for eagerly anticipated headlining act Honne.
Playing against a giant neon “HONNE” backdrop, the band dive straight in with ‘Treat you Right,’ punchy, poppy and a huge sound that lifts everyone up, and it’s not long before the entire room is singing in unison.
Their radio-friendly R&B sound appeals to all, warm and soulful, with some feel good funky elements that are all too easy to dance along. The venue is alive with smiling faces, and few are left standing still as they plow through their set with an expertly polished sound.
The house gospel choir join them on stage for “Good Together” with the array of disco balls hanging over the stage twinkling above and instantly taking the performance to another level.
JONES Joins them on stage to sing her part on “No Place Like Home” which is beautifully down-tempo and catchy. There’s not much else that they can do to impress us, but of course, there would be no other way to exit than with an explosive confetti canon and instigating a full on sing-along for album title track; ‘Warm on a Cold Night.’
It’s clear to see that Honne has quickly built up a considerable fanbase off the back of their debut album. They’ve set the bar quite high and have come a long way in a such a short time; it’s effortless and you’d be forgiven for thinking a performance of this level is the result of a much more mature band.
