Actor Kenny Ireland has sadly passed away following a battle with cancer. The 68-year-old was perhaps best known for his role in ITV’S Benidorm playing Donald Stewart.

Between 1992 and 2003, Ireland was the director of Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre.  In June, Ireland’s character was written out of Benidorm so that the actor could focus on receiving treatment for cancer.

An ITV spokesperson said: “We are terribly saddened to hear that Kenny Ireland has passed away, our thoughts are with his family at this time“. “He was a much loved actor, not only by the cast and crew on Benidorm but by millions of fans out there“.

He appeared as Donald Stewart in Benidorm from the first episode and helped play a huge part in its success. He will be greatly missed.”

Other roles which Ireland was known for, were Derek the Handyman in Acorn Antiques as well as roles in Taggart, Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Heartbeat.
