Florida is most commonly known as a place where many senior citizens go to retire and play Shuffleboard, but what’s less commonly know is the fact that “The Sunshine State” has actually been a beacon for punk and hardcore bands since the 70s.

Florida has played host to many kickass bands that we all know and love, which is why it was especially hard to narrow this list down to our top 10 bands. But it had to be done, so here it is.

(Side note: We know it’s not rock/metal, but we have got to give an honorary mention to our childhood homies Backstreet Boys and NSYNC because they were both formed in Florida! Now back to our regularly scheduled programming.)

Let’s start off by kicking it old school. Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd formed in 1964 (originally as My Backyard) in Jacksonville, Florida. The band embodies classic rock; powerful melodies, supreme guitar solos and classic rock lyrics, Lynyrd Skynyrd has it all. And you’re lying if you say you haven’t sung ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ at the top of your lungs at least once in your life… you might have been drunk, it still counts.
