There was a time when it seemed that no matter what band you were going out to see, a little band called Mallory Knox were up front as a supporting band. Clearly all the relentless touring has paid off, with the five-piece hailing from Cambridge winning hearts in an ever-growing fanbase. Fast-forward to now, at the back of the release of their third album Wired, the band are hot off a mammoth UK tour, finishing off with two back-to-back dates at London’s iconic Koko.
With illuminated MK signs as their backdrop, the band stepped out on stage to a crowd all warmed up by supports Fatherson and Lonely The Brave, wasting no time as they bolstered right through with ‘Giving It Up’. This sets the tempo for the rest of the evening, where Mallory Knox were on high gear and ready to deliver to the eager crowd. Though it’s been but a few weeks since the new album’s been out in the world, it was heartwarming to see the reception the audience gave to newer tunes like ‘California’, ‘Falling In Love’ and ‘Lucky Me’.
While the quintet were definitely keen to showcase some of their newer material, there is no denying the resonance of classics like ‘Wake Up’ or ‘Lighthouse’, anthems that fans have fallen in love with and sang along to for years. Bouncing off the energy from ‘Lighthouse’, the band rolled into the final track of the night ‘Better Off Without You’, never faltering from the high energy levels they’ve managed to maintain throughout.
Catching Mallory Knox live is exactly the experience you imagine it to be. As polished as they’ve ever sounded, the band are clearly enjoying the fruits of their labour while those in attendance happily sang along, jammed along to songs both old and new. Displaying effortless musicianship with a fine catalogue of infectious choruses to boot, the band are always a pleasure to witness in their element.
