While the subculture we all know as emo pretty much died out in the 2010s (with the exception of My Digital Escape, and other confusing internet fads), it’s common to hear phrases such as “you can never escape the emo” and “once and emo, always an emo”. And if you ever identified as emo (or scene for that matter), you will most likely relate to this. There are always signs that trigger flashbacks to the days where you’d buy all your accessories from Claire’s or Hot Topic, or you’d spend all your time hanging out at skate parks with guys whose fringes were bigger than yours. Here’s our list of things that indicate you never actually left your emo phase…(if we’ve missed any out, let us know in the comments!)

You still have appreciation for a good selfie filter, and have at least two photo editing apps on your phone.

You get emotional whenever My Chemical RomanceFall Out Boy, or any other emo band from your youth come up on shuffle (especially Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge).

You still love doing thick wing eyeliner because you’re a pro at it now, or wearing eyeliner on your waterline.

You’re still suffering from damaged hair after all those years of straightening it every day.

You still love tattoos and piercings, even if they are more subtle now.

You still have a crush on Pete Wentz, Gerard Way, or Hayley Williams.

You got upset over the My Chemical Romance break-up (even if it was a little bit).

You still tweet/quote song lyrics from time to time.

Even though you might not have posters of your favourite bands in your bedroom anymore, you still have a picture of them somewhere in your room, or on your phone, computer, or social network profile.

You still have an emo email address that you’re ashamed to tell anyone about (whether it be mrspetewentz@aol.com or rawrremogirlxo@yahoo.com).

Most of the clothes in your wardrobe are black.

You still love dying your hair (especially now that Good Dye Young is a thing).

You still wear Doc Martens, Converse or Vans.

You get emotional when you think about Andy Sixx and Alex Evans.

You still love wearing band shirts, but contemplate buying them at shows now because of the price, and you’re an adult now who has to pay bills.

You stop in the street/gasp/hit your friend for attention when you see an emo in public, because you can’t believe they actually still exist.
