In case you’re unfamiliar with the story, bassist Matthew Leone was the victim of an assault in 2010 which left him with swelling on his brain, after stepping in to protect a woman from being beating by her husband.
At the time, Matthew’s twin brother and singer of Madina Lake, Nathan, wrote on his blog: “I’m afraid I have some of the worst news that has ever hit our lives. A few nights ago, Matthew walked from my apt, a block and a half down the street to meet a friend for a drink. Halfway there he saw a man severely beating his wife. Being the most amazing, strong, heroic and incredible person I know, even though the guy was twice his size, Matthew intervened. He managed to subdue this guy for a second and since his wife was beat up pretty good called the cops. As he did so, the guy jumped him from behind and beat him. This guy did things I can’t even type. Afterwards, he and his beaten wife left Matthew unconscious on the street.”
Matthew was rushed to hospital, and a third of his skull had to be removed as they waited for the swelling in his brain to go down. Thankfully, he recovered well after several bouts of surgery, and now it seems he’s well enough to get back on the stage, and back in the recording studio, and we couldn’t be more relieved!
What a hero. And Madina Lake can write one Hell of a song too! Check out the video for ‘Never Take Us Alive’ below:
