Atlanta’s prog sludge kings Mastodon and Californian hard rock heads Avenged Sevenfold have both been the victims of twitter account hacking that led to racist posts being sent out to fans.
The Twitter hack took place last Friday, with fans ended up subjected to a barrage of racially abusive slurs and videos courtesy of a group dubbing themselves ‘Clan Vv3 Ape Squad’
The hackers boasted “Another couple Twitters got popped by your friendly neighbourhood apes. Mastodon, 131,000 followers – Avenged Sevenfold – 1,230,000 followers”
Sadly, despite the change of name on both accounts during the hack to ‘SleepTheGod’ and the addition of a Vv3 avatar, some fans accused the bands of being racist without twigging something was wrong.
Luckily both groups were able to rectify the issues within 24 hours, deleting the offensive material and issuing the following statements.
Avenged: “A few hours ago the Twitter account of Avenged Sevenfold was hacked. The problem has been resolved.”
Mastodon: “I’m sure you noticed our account was compromised last night. Apologies for that. We’re back in business now.” (The ‘don also added a classic Ron Burgundy ‘Boy, that escalated quickly’ meme to their response.)
