Let’s play a classic game of ‘would you rather.’
Would you rather buy the black Balmain dress pictured above, which will probably last a good chunk of your life, or buy Balmain x H&M‘s glitzy, shoulder-padded statement dress that you’ll probably get sick of after a couple of wears. Undecided? Maybe you’ll be swayed by the fact that the proper designer, Net-a-Porter-bought Balmain dress is £845, and the Balmain x H&M creation is currently going for over £1000 on eBay. Over £1000.
Maybe this madness is The Kardashian Effect at work. Or maybe the world just has gone mad.
Being unable to afford the designer wares of my dreams, I am all for being a fashion victim at the merciless hands of the high street. I’ve done some things I’m not proud of in order to get what I want – including skipping a day of mock GCSEs to make sure I snatched up those crocodile-print pieces from Christopher Kane‘s second collection for Topshop, and asking my grandmother to travel all over Spain in search of a Zara store that stocked some elusive ponyskin leopard-print boots – but I would never spend thousands (or even hundreds) of pounds on a designer-high street collaboration. Especially not one that would make me look like a Kardashian.
What do you think of the Balmain x H&M mania? Justifiable or just plain stupid?
