Cheltenham indie-pop band Young Kato have had an impressive 2014 having toured with You Me At Six and Rixton and now 2015 sees the release of their debut album, Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow. Packed with the perfect vibe to get you into the summer spirit.
The very first track ‘Sunshine’ is ridden with that feel-good summer vibe, sure to put a smile on any face. The track has impressive guitar hooks and a catchy chorus over synths and shouts ending on a whistle to tie the track off. ‘Drink, Dance, Play’ follows this similar course, encouraging exactly what the title of the track suggests, in a slightly cheesy way chanting, “we drink and we dance and we dance and we play”. This would probably be great when performed live, having the crowd chant back to the band.
‘Children Of The Stars’ brings about a nostalgic feeling with lyrics “If you’re ever feeling low if you’re scared and you’re alone just remember, I take you back to ‘93”. Young Kato have truly mastered the talent of making thrilling music with lyrics that anybody can relate too. ‘Ultraviolet’ picks up the pace a little leading into ‘Lights’ which slows things down a bit, proving once again how brilliant Young Kato are lyrically while singing about mixed feelings but still being certain about one thing, “… and I know you’re meant for me”.
Don’t Wait ‘Til Tomorrow generally follows a theme of love and relationships, all with different circumstances, some being happy whilst others are sad, Young Kato portray these different situations ever so gracefully throughout their music. ‘Runaway’ is another example of a kind of loss of love which makes you feel ‘free’ singing, “I’m free, I’m alive, I’m a runaway”.
Young Kato are without a doubt, brilliant lyricists and they certainly seem comfortable in their own sound, which they have clearly worked hard to develop. The band have created a brilliant debut effort and it will certainly be exciting to see what the future holds for them.
