When listening to The Fake Boys, it’s important to make no assumptions. It’s been 4 years since the band’s last release and this record is just as unpredictable as the last. Every song is different from the next, making you wonder what moves the band will continue to make in the future. I Love My Life When You’re Around, feels as if the band were trying to experiment with as many different sounds as possible during its recording process but The Fake Boys pull it off confidently. The entire album sells itself by giving the impression that the musicians create serious music, having fun with their sound whilst doing so.
Kicking off with ‘Newz’, one of the album’s less aggressive tracks, easing you into some light punk to prepare you for the chaos occurring throughout the record. ‘Ok, I’m Up’ is the song on the album that stands out the most as it’s incredibly unexpected to hear something like this on a punk record. The song instantly has a calming effect. This track is jaw-droppingly raw. So raw in fact that it makes us wish that the whole album had a similar sound, proving that they are anything but repetitive.
The track is then followed by ‘Brainfog’ which is one of the record’s catchy points with gripping guitar riffs and sleazy vocals, easing into a partially psychedelic effect as the song progresses. Once again gripping you again by how diverse each track is.
Overall the album warms us up to the band and is an album that is a must when looking for a punk record with a different approach to the scene. The Fake Boys are not afraid to stand out which goes completely in their favour.
