Progressive metal band Terraform are creating a new definition of progressive music with their new EP Adrift. The vocals are cleaner in comparison to previous releases, but there is still that occasional addition of piercing screams, so there are the right amount of hardcore elements woven into their music. Riffs often progress into something which seems the almost polar opposite of the original motif that was first heard, but the transformations are seamless, and express the strength of the bands melodic writing.
Energy is high throughout the album, but this is especially evident in tracks such as ‘Imaginations’. Harsh drumming and intense, rapid guitar riffs are relentlessly played until molded into something even thicker once the clear vocals drop out. Distorted guitar becomes fuzz which ricochets violently, with a more clearly distinguished guitar riff during the breakdown.
Intensity and flat out power is forgotten momentarily at the beginning of ‘The Seraphim.’ Light, harmonious guitars and a touch of cymbals give off a very relaxed vibe, before being overpowered by heavier, destructive chords, the lighter riff still lingering in the background. Although the character of each riff is very different, the contrasting themes compliment each other nicely, and the lighter, more melodic ending section seems less out of place.
Overall the melodic writing of this album is very strong and the recreation of progressive metal is very effective. Riffs are full of contrast, which is a real strength of Terraform’s writing, and make things more unpredictable, making a better listening experience.
