Skunk Anansie are finally back. With a brand new album, Anarchytecture, to promote, this tour saw the band playing live for the first time in 3 years.
Although the bands new material was as epic, and performed with as much energy, as we would come to expect from Skunk Anansie, it was clear that tonight’s majority were here for the hits. The crowd madly erupted at classics such as ‘Twisted’ and ‘Weak’, with every person in the room instantly transported back to their teenage punk-rock selves, screaming out the lyrics as vocalist, Skin, stood on the crowd and crowd surfed back to the stage. New track ‘Love Someone Else’, which appears to be the big hitter off the new album, upped the excitement levels slightly, but sadly there were clear dips in the set with the new material that played a huge contrast in the atmosphere of the room; an age-old problem I think a lot of older bands can probably relate to after being away from the spotlight.
Despite this, the band powered through with an incredible performance . Ending the set with ‘Charlie Big Potato’ left everyone refusing to believe that was it over but the sound of synchronised stomping rumbled through the venue until the band eventually came back on stage to throw us a few more. ‘100 Hundred Ways to Be a Good Girl’ and ‘Hedonism’ were just pure, wow! With the whole crowd singing as loud as the PA, Skin took a moment to take it all in and, still after all this time, seems taken back by the response.
After 6 studio albums and 22 years as a band it’s clear that despite the crowd being unfamiliar with the new material, they certainly haven’t lost a trick. Skunk Anansie are back and they are here to stay!
