19 year old rapper Shane Chubbz has been building a buzz for a while now, with his “Chubbziano EP” he really shows the scene what he can do.
Opening with the smoky “European Wavy Boy Intro” he states his intentions clear from the outset “N___as I admired when i was 16, I left behind with these verse and these 16’s” “Tequila” samples The Champ‘s “Tequila Song”, and Shane glides over the beat with tales of Beyonce fans and healthy eating. It perfectly suits his casually cocky attitude and between this and the intro sets the tone for the tape.”Unbelievable Scenes” see’s Shane really stretch himself lyrically with hilariously indulgent punchlines: “Taylor Swift tryna f__k me, I thought I was ugly?”
The EP moves up a gear with “Pockets” The song is no freestyle and really needs to be a single. The On. Gaud instrumental is decadent, and Shane performs incredibly. The track feels as if it was built around him, his rhymes become dream-like fantasies, just before the singers vocals comes in. “Pockets” is a stand out track on the project.
“Pockets” sets up the second half of the EP perfectly. From here the EP features more soul, and in depth rhymes. “Singing Miracles” sees Shane discuss the darker side of his mind state, watching people die and jail time. The track doesn’t feel particularly dark, so it’s up to Shane to ground it. And here he excels. It’s a departure from the cocky comedic rhymes, but the progression of the EP feels gradual.
After a quick freestyle over Birdman’s “What Happened To That Boy” instrumental with “Monday Night Raw” to lighten the mood a little. Then onto “Foreign” Sampling Holy Name of Mary Choral Family’s “Sermon(He’ll Give Us What We Really Need)“, here the mood is almost somber as Shane reveals his dreams and past loves. He’s wide open here and the honesty minus any bragging really hits home and helps the track connect. It’s the perfect closer and completes a great EP. If only it was longer. Hopefully this will mean a lot more music to come from Shane, as this is a style severely lacking from the UK scene.
