Tweak Bird consists of two brothers hailing from Illinois, America and the band claim to make “heavy but happy music” according to their facebook. They also claim to be “everything good you’ve never heard”. Both bold statements yet both impressively accurate. Their music has a heavy rock edge which could otherwise be thrown into the ‘stoner’ rock category for want of a better term, and it certainly isn’t ‘metal’ or so heavy your ears feel ready to explode. It’s like a genre jumping EP mixing the roaring rock band feel with indie gritty vocals alongside.
A lot of the tracks have the feeling of an Oasis track behind them, with the vocals gritty and harsh. It is most evident in EP closer ‘Know It All’ – any comparison to the Gallagher brothers is an impressive feat. Caleb Bird’s vocal yelps and high pitched falsetto has a really infectious sense of melody that regardless of what you think of the individual tracks his voice will have you hypnotized.
The pair may want to tone down the synthesizers a bit though, tracks such as ‘Weight’ it seems the voices are just a drone over a lot of sketchy noise, without this the track would sit really well. The crashing guitars and pelting drum beats are more than enough and the synths are just unnecessary. The same is so in ‘Moans’ where the drones of “Everyone is paranoid” repeated again and again is overpowered by the synthesizers. But despite all of this for a band consisting of only two people it is pretty impressive stuff!
The brothers showcase such a variety over such few tracks, ‘Pigeons’ is a dreamy calm number which moves swiftly into ‘Bunch O Brains’ which is a fast moving sonic filled blasting of a track.
Tweak Bird show off such musical diversity in such a short space of time and despite clocking in at a mere sixteen minutes Tweak Bird are a perfect example of how diverse a genre can be when its plunged into the right hands. This EP is only a taster of things to come.
