A band at the beginning of their journey will undoubtedly face uncertainty about the music direction they take and whether they wear their influences on their sleeves. Some adapt musically, whilst finding their own sound, others get swallowed in their respective scenes destined to produce generic songs that are lacking an identity.
In the case of Northampton’s Threads, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel. Taking two years out since their last EP ‘Surgery’ seems to have done the quartet the world of good. Refining their sound and dropping their keyboard player latest EP ‘The Emperor’s New Misery’ is a second shot making a dent in the indie scene.
Opener Summer is a chirpy introduction to proceedings, as upbeat as they can come, complete with woah ohs’s. The
vocals sound as though they have come straight from the butchers, while there is evidence to suggest that Threads are going down a more guitar driven track. This more evident in Fight, with its prominent stabbing riffs and a chorus guaranteed to get the most miserable bouncing up and down with a cheesy grin.
It is apparent that the music is doing most of the talking for Threads, with enough melody to keep you preoccupied, the lyrics, unfortunately, do not match up and are a little bland and uninspired, with Gambling, “place your bets now, because this could go on and on and on and on.”
It is clear that threads major influence is We Are Scientists as there formula is sprinkled throughout the four tracks on offer, none more so then on closer Misery, shame they have not got the same quirky appeal as their idols, at the moment.
However there is enough on show to see that Threads are onto something that could propel them up the ladder to success. Let’s hope they do not leave it as long next time.
