Review: The Saturdays – All Fired Up (Single)

We check out the latest single ‘All Fired Up’ from The Saturdays! See what we thought here…

Artist: The Saturdays
Release: All Fired Up (Single)
Release Date: 2nd September 2011

Five-piece girl pop bands are something of a British institution; aesthetically surpassing the average, preened to within an inch of their sanity and role models to millions. Without much effort at all it seems they are manufactured and catapulted onto our radios, an airwave tour de force if you will, and The Saturdays are the current ‘It’ brand give even the Mulberry Alexa a run for its money.

In 8 days The Saturdays have racked up a respectable 140,947 views of their forthcoming single ‘All Fired Up’; the lyric video of which has been made available on YouTube since July 22nd, a peculiar move with the release date another six weeks away. Lacking in comparison to the girls’ previous chart smashes, imagining any excitement around this track at all, let alone having the longevity to last until Autumn is difficult.

‘All Fired Up’ will be massive. There is no doubt about it. Simple, repetitive lyrics over electronica dance loops are a sure fire to prevent sold-out arenas tripping over tricky word play during those all important sing-backs. But juxtapose the quality of the style icons’ wardrobes to that of this single, something just doesn’t add up; surely the focus is all wrong?

That’s the amazing thing about The British Girl Group mould, the masterful way their bubblegum tunes lighten the day is remarkable. And The Saturdays are the quintessential girl group: hair flicking, arm throwing, shoulder bopping slo-mo’s included. Even a track as lazy as ‘All Fired Up’ is catchier than chicken pox in nursery school so even haters will bop and do their best to secretly seek out those fashions showcased by the sartorially savvy fivesome – although the pronunciation of ‘radar’ is bound to drive souls hell-ward.

Clubland will love it, tweens will adore it but this time around, The Saturday’s haven’t produced a pop-diamond; ‘All Fired Up’ lackadaisically drifts along without any of their signature sparkle.
