The weird and marvellously wacky world of The Dollyrots has exposed itself in their self-titled fourth album. The album is a wild roller-coaster ride, ranging from the three chord hall of fame to more electronic pop orientated songs. And do we care? Hell no, this album rocks!
‘Starting Over’ is a slightly disappointing album opener which opens on a bit of a downer. But behold the genius of Kelly Ogden it bursts into life of a full blown punk song in 55 seconds, before the more addictively ‘I Wanna Go’ kicks in, which is the formula for most songs from the album.
An album doesn’t necessarily have to be cohesive depending on the band, as the pop-punk trio show that all you need to do is write a load of anthems and get on with it. For example, the infamous three chord approach is displayed in ‘Hyperactive’ whilst being riddled in electronics and infectious crowd chants. Even the likes of the bizarre ‘So Wrong It’s Right’ fits into the album for its oddity and the rather jumpy ‘F U Famous’ has the sound that is literally structured to be performed in the live environment. Even from the outro of ‘Starting Over Again’ the listener has adapted to The Dollyrots craziness, seeing as it is practically an extension of the punkier section of the first song and turns it into something spectacular.
Let’s be honest, the album did take time to adjust to in order for it to make the slightest bit of sense. But once you warm up to it then you won’t regret absorbing the madness into making The Dollyrots one of your favourite bands.
