London based rockers Slaves to Gravity hit our ears once again with their beautiful music in the form of new album ‘Underwaterouterspace’. The group have stuck to their chirpy hard rock/contemporary rock sound, sure to please the many fans out there. The group themselves have a great history behind them, with some members previously playing in bands such as The Ga Ga’s. Since the form of Slaves to Gravity in 2006, the band has gained a huge retrospect of followers, whilst producing fun hard rocking goodness.
First track on the album, ‘Good Advice’, sets the mood perfectly. It represents everything about Slaves to Gravity, with dominant heavy riffs, shredding guitar solos and rough vocals. It instantly grabs the attention of the listener from the start, which is something a lot of albums miss out on. It’s slightly repetitive, but nevertheless a pleasure.
‘Honesty’ is the next track on the album. It’s a little lighter, playing twangy guitar flicks through the verse before breaking out in the choruses. However the signature hard rock guitar slides and ongoing beat is still there. The vocals from Tommy Gleeson in this song in particular are by far the best. They still sound rough and very rock ‘n’ roll, but certain bits are a bit lighter and more melodic. They really shine out compared to other songs on the album. Its inevitable this song is going to be in your head for a while…
Listening through the album, one resounding thought is just how fun and upbeat it is. The style of music is kept in trend with more popular rock music, whilst mixing in hard rock traits and making it their own. ‘Unknown’ is a good example and actually reminds you quite a lot of rock legends Velvet Revolver. It’s a perfect concoction of blissful singing and heavy distorted guitars and pounding drums.
After many fast paced and upbeat tunes, it was about time for a mellower rock melody. Every rock band needs one, and Slaves to Gravity have pulled off a beauty with ‘Silence Now’. The clean guitar and rhythmic drumming keep the beat going, but it’s a lot softer. The vocals soar reaching the high notes.
However, it doesn’t last long before the heavy rock comes back, storming in with intense riffs and head banging beats. If you’re into bands such as Velvet Revolver and Black Stone Cherry, then you have to check out Slaves to Gravity if you haven’t already. And as for the new album, a big thumbs up from us! Definitely going to be played at HTF HQ!
