Professor Penguin founder Jonny Abraham has seen his solo act grow into a unique collection of nine young musicians who have quickly developed a reputation for dynamic and highly energetic shows. Their current success on the live circuit was topped off by a sell out show at Ronnie Scott’s in London, so with their debut album ‘Planes’ due for release on April 9th 2012 it would seem that they can do no wrong and even Q magazine are convinced that Professor Penguin are “set to turn heads with their debut album” .
Their first two singles, Pilot and Pirate have already caused a stir in the industry with the band winning support from The Fly, Q Magazine’s “Track of the Day” and from notable music industry personalities such as Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie and Steve Lamacq. Having been aired on multiple shows on BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, BBC London and XFM it would seem the listeners are in agreement.
The surprising use of Spanish sounding trumpets does not prepare you for the beautiful melodic vocals in Pilot. With a sound slightly reminiscent of Just Jack, the remaining tracks on the album prove to be equally surprising as they experiment with different musical styles and instruments to create a sound that could well become the laid back soundtrack of Summer 2012. As the album progresses, more and more complex harmonies are introduced and as we listen to each track it is easy to see just how proficient Professor Penguin have become in creating their own unique sound.
Professor Penguin’s debut album Planes is a breath of fresh air and, with more and more people asking for a change from the rather bland diet of ‘same beat different voice’ that perpetuates the airwaves, Planes looks like it is set to be the ‘answer’ people are looking for.
