‘Last Chance Saloon’ is the new single from Phantom Limb. Hearing the name of this band, you’d presume they reside in a genre likened to death metal, but they are far from that. The Bristol based group mix country and folk with blues, soul and gospel, creating a boldly distinctive style that brings less mainstream sounds to the forefront in contemporary music.
‘Last Chance Saloon’ is an upbeat blend of styles, aptly showcasing the beautifully rapturous vocals of lead singer, Yolanda Quartey. Light percussion holds a steady driving beat for the folk guitars (both acoustic and electric) and briskly vivacious piano. The centre of the track contains a guitar improvisation which breaks the song up, demonstrates the creativity of the band and adds an element of variety to the main melody. The song ends with lyrical repetition with added vocals, taking the song back over the chorus with some really poignant vocal improv. There is a really nice contrast between the high pitched transient acoustic guitar against the raspy velvet tones of the vocals.
Phantom Limb have used a stunning amalgamation of musical styles as a band, that distinguish them from anything else in popular music. This band are really fresh and interesting, with a sound reflective of the past but equally pioneering to bring new sounds to the music scene. This single is definitely worth a listen.
