After forming in 2013 in the seaside city of Plymouth, four friends known as  Patrons are now ready for 2014 with the release of their self-titled EP that will have you at the edge of your seats and wishing there was more for you to listen to. We’re going to be honest here.  You’re in for a treat.

Although only consisting of three tracks, ‘Patrons’ is dark, full of angst, clever song writing, clever musicianship and will take you through a musical experience that will have your emotions tugging away at each other. Straight away with the opening track, ‘Rituals’, you know that Patrons are serious about their music. The track opens with muted guitar chords with a creeping bass and lead guitar before exploding into wall of incredible stop-start rhythmic ‘riffing’ and then into a subtly catchy chorus.

With this EP, Patrons manage to create a pure musical experience that we are sure anyone can appreciate no matter what their music taste. Danny Brooks’  manages to intertwine the melodic side and more ‘unclean’ side of singing with his vocals that give a sense of genuine desperation, particularly in final track ‘Little Victories’, which is so full of energy and emotion that managed to give us a few shivers on listening. Possibly our favourite track of the EP, ‘Movements’, shows off more musicianship with harmonising guitars and sudden dynamic thrusts that give this track (and the others!) variety. The individual musical parts manage to link up exceptionally well whilst still managing to stand out separately in the track and throughout the EP.

It’s clear that ‘Patrons’ have been honest with themselves and created music that they have a personal connection to and we love it. It’s refreshing to see bands who are just starting out that are willing to ignore the ‘popular scene’ and just do what they want to do. A little bit reminiscent of At The Drive In at times (which is a good thing!), the music on this self-titled is capturing and only has us wanting to hear more, which is annoying because there are only three tracks! If they manage to build positively on this EP, then we can hope to see their name around a lot more.  A truly promising start for Patrons.
